{"id":1334,"date":"2023-10-23T12:13:57","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T17:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/daboyzcanecorso.com\/Staging\/?p=1334"},"modified":"2023-10-25T15:58:17","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T20:58:17","slug":"how-to-protect-your-dog-against-deadly-parvovirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daboyzcanecorso.com\/Staging\/how-to-protect-your-dog-against-deadly-parvovirus\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Protect Your Dog Against Deadly Parvovirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Outbreaks of the contagious parvovirus are serious and require immediate attention and isolation to prevent this deadly virus from spreading.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Baker Institute for Animal Health, canine <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/departments-centers-and-institutes\/baker-institute\/our-research\/canine-parvovirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parvovirus<\/a><\/span><\/strong> (also known as <strong>CPV<\/strong> or <strong>parvo<\/strong>) \u201cis a highly contagious viral disease \u2026 that commonly causes acute gastrointestinal illness.\u201d While the disease commonly infects pups between 6 and 20 weeks old, older dogs can also be affected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Around 1976, CPV emerged among European dogs. Also, all dogs will not exhibit the same symptoms.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to USA Today, there are 900 cases diagnosed <strong>each day<\/strong> in the United States with approximately 330,000 cases <strong>annually<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">If left untreated, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/09\/23\/treatment-for-parvo-in-dogs-nears-usda-approval\/70922537007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mortality rate<\/a><\/span> is as high as 91%.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Puppies under 6 months and unvaccinated dogs are at the highest risk of infection. In addition, puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months \u201care also <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluecross.org.uk\/advice\/dog\/health-and-injuries\/parvovirus-in-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more susceptible<\/a><\/span> to second infections\u201d and life-threatening dehydration.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">CPV is closely related to FPV (feline panleukopenia). A recent study indicated only 44% of dog owners know what parvo is and 20% have no idea, so knowledge is key.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canineparvovirus.org\/parvo-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parvo symptoms<\/a><\/span> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loss of appetite.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diarrhea that is foul-smelling with blood.<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting.<\/li>\n<li>Lethargy.<\/li>\n<li>Collapse.<\/li>\n<li>Depression.<\/li>\n<li>High fever.<\/li>\n<li>Shock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since symptoms can take from 3 to 7 days to emerge after exposure, avoid potentially contaminated areas (like dog parks) or businesses (like doggy daycares or kennels) after cases of parvovirus have been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Bouts of bloody diarrhea and\/or vomiting may &#8211; or may not &#8211; indicate CPV. Your vet can properly diagnose the presence of parvo with the ELISA and PCR tests with fecal samples. The ELISA test can be completed in less than 15 minutes in the vet\u2019s office (but can occasionally produce misleading results) while the more effective PCR test needs to be sent to a laboratory specialized in PCR-based testing. Your vet may also do a white blood cell count. The parvovirus can spread through body fluids including poop and vomit. In fact, dogs can catch parvo by simply sniffing an infected dog\u2019s feces.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parvo can also survive <strong>outside<\/strong> the dog\u2019s body for six months and more and also resist heat and cold. So, if there has been a parvo outbreak in your area, keep your dog away from places where dogs gather as this virus can survive on surfaces (including bedding, food and water bowls, toys, grass and more) for <strong>months or even years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dogs Infected with Parvo: Treatment<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The primary treatment for dogs with parvo involves the management and supportive care of the symptoms. In other words, treatments seek to <strong>alleviate<\/strong> the symptoms but they <strong>cannot<\/strong> fight or cure the virus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Supportive treatments include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Intravenous fluids and nutrients since the infected intestinal tract cannot effectively absorb or even tolerate them.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Possible blood transfusions to boost low blood cell counts.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Intravenous or injected antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Medications for nausea and diarrhea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dogs who recover from a CPV infection retain immunity throughout their life against the strain that infected them. However, it is possible for a recovered dog to become <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canineparvovirus.org\/parvo-survival\/can-dogs-get-parvo-more-than-once\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reinfected<\/a><\/span> with another CPV strain, but it\u2019s not common.
