While sharing food with your furry companion might be tempting, knowing <strong>which<\/strong> foods are safe &#8211; and which are not &#8211; is <strong>crucial<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below are five common foods your dog should <strong>NEVER<\/strong> eat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1. According to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/chocolate-poisoning-in-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VCA Animal Hospitals<\/a><\/span>, <em>\u201cthe darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more dangerous it is to dogs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chocolate toxicity can lead to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vomiting and diarrhea.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and blood pressure.<\/li>\n<li>Seizures and tremors.<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatitis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, keep <strong>all<\/strong> chocolate (including cocoa beans and powder, baking chocolate, and your stash of chocolaty goodies) high out of reach of curious dogs!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2. Grapes and Raisins<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although a healthy snack for us, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. <strong>All<\/strong> grapes, whether cooked, seedless, peeled, dried, fresh, or any color, are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pets\/dogs\/why-dogs-cant-eat-grapes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highly toxic to dogs<\/a><\/span>, <strong>even in small amounts<\/strong>. So, it&#8217;s best to avoid sharing your trail mix, fruit salad, grape juice, jelly or jam with your furry best friend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3. This includes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2024\/01\/29\/can-dogs-eat-onions\/72246060007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all kinds of onions<\/a><\/span>, leeks, scallions, and chives. Whether <strong>raw<\/strong>, <strong>cooked<\/strong>, or even <strong>powdered<\/strong>, onions should stay out of your dog\u2019s bowl! Also, avoid offering bites of your food that may contain onions, and check <strong>all<\/strong> labels of any commercial broths you may add to your dog\u2019s food.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>4. Xylitol<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This widely used artificial sweetener (classified as a natural sugar alcohol) is <strong>extremely toxic to dogs<\/strong>, causing a rapid drop in blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), liver failure, seizures, and worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Xylitol is found in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventivevet.com\/xylitol-products-toxic-for-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">700+ products<\/a><\/span> (at last count), including gum and candy, peanut butter, protein bars, cosmetics, vitamins, medications, toothpaste, mouthwash and floss, and <strong>even clothing<\/strong>! <strong>Read labels carefully to protect your canine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Xylitol is <strong>also<\/strong> listed as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Birch sugar, birch bark extract, or wood sugar.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sugar alcohol.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">d-xylitol.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">xylite.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">xylitylglucoside.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Zylatol.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">1,4-anhydro-d-xylitol and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(NOTE: While hailed as a safer substitute for sugar for people,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>recently, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the <strong>increased<\/strong> risk of heart attack and stroke in people<\/em><br \/>\n<em>with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/xylitol-may-affect-cardiovascular-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher levels of xylitol<\/a><\/span> in their blood.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>5. But never, <strong>EVER<\/strong> give a dog a <strong>cooked<\/strong> bone! Bones break down during cooking, baking, or BBQing and can splinter, <strong>especially<\/strong> with aggressive chewers! These splinters can cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Choking.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Internal Injuries.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Intestinal blockages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Stick to <strong>raw<\/strong>, <strong>non-brittle<\/strong> bones and always supervise your dog while chewing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>An Increasing Threat<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to the foods listed above, there is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/marijuana-poisoning-in-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing risk<\/a><\/span> following the legalization and popularity of cannabis (marijuana).
