Temperature records are being broken across the planet! The latest data suggests 2024 could be the hottest year globally since records began in the mid-1800s. If it’s hot for you, imagine how your dog feels in his fur coat! Below are 5 Corso-approved tips to help keep your Cane Corso (and other canines) cool this summer.
Hydration is Key
One of the most important aspects of keeping your Cane Corso cool is ensuring they stay well-hydrated, especially with their muscle mass. Always have fresh water available for your dog, both indoors and outdoors. Consider investing in a dog water fountain to encourage them to drink more. Adding ice cubes to their water bowl can also help keep the water cool and refreshing. Continuously monitor their daily intake to make sure they are getting enough water.
As a general rule, dogs require at least one ounce of water
(1/8 of a cup) per day for each pound of body weight.”

Not sure if your dog is getting enough hydration?
Gently pinch and lift the skin between your dog’s shoulder blade and release. The pinched skin will quickly return to its normal position if the dog is well-hydrated,
but it will remain pinched or tented if dehydrated.
Shade and Shelter
Providing ample shade is essential if your Cane Corso spends much time outside.
While the breed’s short and coarse hair is much better suited for warmer weather, create a cool retreat for your dog by placing a canopy, umbrella, or shade sail in your yard. Trees and shrubs can also provide natural shade.
Remember, concrete and asphalt can become extremely hot and burn your dog’s paws. Providing a grassy area or a shaded patio with a cool surface will help protect their feet.
AVOID shaving your dog in the heat as they will lose
their protection against the sun and heat
and will also be at risk of sunburn.
Cool Treats: Beat the Heat!
Who doesn’t love a cold treat on a hot day? Your Cane Corso is no different! Frozen treats can be a fun and delicious way to help your dog cool down and stay hydrated.
- Make frozen dog treats by blending dog-safe fruits like watermelon, blueberries, and strawberries with water, broth, or plain yogurt and freezing them in ice cube trays or dog-themed silicone molds.
- Freeze bite-sized pieces of dog-friendly and water-rich fruits and vegetables from the list to the right.
- Buy commercial frozen treats to have on hand for your dog.
Cool Down Indoors
Keep your Cane Corso indoors, where it’s air-conditioned on particularly hot days. Create a cool indoor environment with air conditioning and fans, preferably on cooler tile or wood floors.
NOTE: Fans alone are not usually enough to keep your dog
cool and comfortable.
You can also lay down cooling mats or damp towels for your dog to lie on. Some dogs enjoy a cool bath or a gentle spray with the hose, but always ensure the water isn’t too cold to avoid unwanted shock.
Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke are serious risks during the summer. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms:
- Heavy panting.
- Excessive drooling.
- Red/pale, dry, or sticky gums.
- Rapid heartbeat.
- Vomiting.
- Lethargy.
- Uncoordinated movements.
If you suspect your dog is suffering from excessive heat exposure, immediately move them to a cooler area, offer water, and contact your veterinarian.
The Final Word
Keeping your Cane Corso cool during a record-breaking summer requires effort and attention, but ensuring your furry friend stays comfortable can help your Cane Corso enjoy the summer safely by your side!
