The Working Breed: Cane Corso: What It Means to Own One

Bubba, a male Corso, Patrolling the Yard

In today’s blog, we’re going to address what it means to own this working breed when it comes to physical and mental exercise!

ALL dogs need daily stimulation and exercise to maintain their:

  • Health and well-being.
  • Balance.
  • Happiness.

But working dogs are a completely different breed!

Working Breeds: 101

Working dogs are domesticated canines that assist humans in a variety of purposeful ways. These dog breeds are typically the epitome of power and intelligence (and headstrong can apply as well). But those desirable dog traits also come with an irrefutable, genetic need for a daily “job” as:

  • Herding Dogs.
  • Protection Dogs.
  • Military or Police Dogs.
  • Search and Rescue Dogs.
  • Service or Therapy Dogs and more.

As mentioned in our initial blog, this Italian breed of Mastiff has always been bred to “work” since ancient times as:

  • War dogs.
  • Herders and protectors of livestock.
  • Hunters of large game.
  • Protectors of humans.

Even if your Corso is going to live a pampered life as an affectionate companion in your home, it is still critical to properly engage and fulfill their natural, genetic instincts with proper and daily exercise, training and stimulation. Remember, a tired dog is a happier dog, which also applies to the Cane Corsi.

Working Breeds: Physical & Mental Stimulation: 101

It cannot be stressed enough, if you decide to add this working breed, Cane Corso to your home and life be honest with yourself about how active you truly are! The Corso breed is known for its high energy; so daily exercise is a must from puppyhood through adulthood.

For puppies around 3 months old, start with short 5-10 minute daily walks and gradually increase the walk to 15-20 minutes through his first year. Learn to recognize when your puppy is tired and be careful to not over-exercise him!

In addition, spend time challenging your pup’s mental and sensory senses (seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling and touching) with games, interactive toys, balls or chew toys.

NOTE: Puppies under 1 year should NOT engage in a lot of jumping, stairs or running on hard surfaces to avoid injuring the joints and bones which are still developing.

As Cane Corso puppies mature past their first year, they will begin to require more adequate physical exercise. While the AKC recommends an average of 30 minutes of daily exercise for the “typical” dog, as a working breed, the adult Cane Corso will require around 90 minutes of proper daily exercise to properly burn their excess energy!

Great ideas for effectively exercising the Corso over 1 year old include:

  • Hiking or jogging.
  • Canine Sports.
  • Biking.
  • Fetch or Frisbee.
  • Tug-of-war (great for those rainy days!).

Remember, the Corso was deliberately bred to have a large and powerful physique and tons of energy to effectively fulfill their assigned jobs.

Without extensive, daily exercise and stimulation, owners will face negative and even destructive behaviors by a frustrated Corso trying to release their pent-up, excess energy. Unwanted behaviors like:

  • Boredom.
  • Barking or whining.
  • Digging.
  • Escaping.
  • Hyperactivity.
  • Destructiveness.
  • Aggressiveness.
  • Excess weight and weight-related issues.
