What It Means to Be the Best: Cane Corso Breeding

The Cane Corso of Da Boyz Cane Corso

As dedicated Cane Corso breeders, our commitment extends beyond simply pairing dogs and producing litters. We understand – and accept – the responsibility for shaping the future of this majestic breed. That’s why we prioritize official testing of hips, hearts, and elbows in all our breeding dogs. It’s not just a box to check; it’s a cornerstone of our ethos, ensuring healthier, happier generations of Cane Corsos.

Official testing is crucial in maintaining the breed’s health and vitality. In particular, hip dysplasia, heart disease, and elbow dysplasia are common concerns in large dog breeds like the Cane Corso. By subjecting our breeding dogs to rigorous testing protocols, we aim to:

  • Identify and mitigate any potential issues.
  • Safeguard the well-being of our puppies.
  • Preserve the breed standard.

Testing for Canine Hip Dysplasias (CHD)

Promoting the best, long-term musculoskeletal health of all our puppies, we proudly adhere to the standards set by organizations like the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and PennHIP for hip testing. These tests evaluate the hip joint’s integrity and can identify potential dysplastic changes early on. By only breeding dogs with excellent hip scores, we reduce the risk of hip dysplasia in our puppies.

Elbow Dysplasia Testing

Another common orthopedic issue in larger breeds, elbow dysplasia, is another top priority in our testing regimen. By screening for elbow dysplasia using radiographs and an OFA evaluation, we ensure that our breeding dogs have sound elbow joints, reducing the risk of lameness and discomfort in their offspring.

Heart Health Testing

Heart health is another area of focus in our breeding program. We conduct OFA evaluations to assess cardiac function and detect any abnormalities. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most common heart condition for the Corso and can have devastating effects. DCM is defined as the “disease of a dog’s heart muscle and results in an enlarged heart” making it harder for the heart to pump. But with thorough testing, we proactively minimize the prevalence of such diseases in our Corso bloodlines.

Cane Corso Breeding: For Us, It’s Personal

Our commitment to official testing is not just about meeting standards; it’s about surpassing them. We go above and beyond to ensure every breeding dog in our program undergoes comprehensive health screenings, providing our puppy buyers with peace of mind and confidence in the quality of our dogs.

But our dedication to testing isn’t solely driven by a desire to meet breeding standards; it’s deeply personal and fuels our ongoing commitment to rigorous testing and transparency in our breeding practices. When you bring home a puppy from us, you are not just getting a pet; you also become a part of our extended family for life and we want nothing but the best for them and their new canine companion.
